The memory of country music icon George Jones, who died last April, is honored in a new exhibit by The Center for Popular Music (CPM). The display, which features Jones’s albums, sheet music and news articles, is open to the public in the Center, on the first floor of the Mass Communication building, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. daily.
Jones, also known as “The Possum,” embraced a career that spanned decades and included multiple No. 1 songs. He’s most know for his hit “He Stopped Loving Her Today.” He is considered by many to be the greatest singer in the history of country music. Even music legend Johnny Cash, when asked about his favorite singer, would respond, “You mean besides George Jones?”
MTSU’s connection with Jones’s legacy was firmly established in November 2013 after Nancy Jones, his widow, announced that her family had created a scholarship fund for the university. MTSU Recording Industry Chair Beverly Keel is overseeing the donation drive for the fund, with the goal of generating multiple scholarships and programs that celebrate Jones’s music and career. The George Jones exhibit will be open until mid-March.
