In conjunction with the Society for Photographic Education 2014 regional conference, the Baldwin Photographic Gallery is featuring the works of Huger Foote and Michael Peven until Oct. 17.
Huger Foote is an established commercial photographer and has developed an extensive group of collectors, both public and private, around the world. In 2011 he received a commission from The New York Times to capture the city during springtime. Foote is a notorious wanderer of back alleys, deserted roadways and abandoned lots and is a keen observer of the commonplace. He combines color, tight composition and intense light and shadows to transform mundane objects into large-scale observations of the world around us.
Michael Peven is a professor of art at the University of Arkansas, Fayetteville, where he directs the photography program and teaches studio photography, the history of photography and bookmaking. He works in a wide variety of photographic and photo-related media in the production of his works and has recently been involved with projects in computer-assisted environment-specific installations and limited edition artist bookworks. Peven’s work has been exhibited in more than 40 one-person and more than 100 group exhibitions since 1975.
The Society for Photographic Education regional conference is at MTSU from Oct. 3 to Oct. 5. The nonprofit membership organization provides and fosters an understanding of photography as a means of diverse creative expression, cultural insight and experimental practice.
The Baldwin Photographic Gallery is on the second floor of the Bragg Mass Communication Building. The 1,300-square-foot gallery features 200 feet of display space and museum-quality lighting to showcase the permanent Baldwin collection as well as traveling exhibits and student work.
