Student journalists win 12 certificates in Atlanta

MTSU students brought home 12 certificates from the Southeast Journalism Conference awards held in Atlanta, Feb. 26 through 28.

In the competition for entries produced during 2014, the top finishers were: Best Editorial Writer (2nd place), Robert Allen; Best Radio Journalist (2nd place), Emily West; Best Press Photographer (2nd place), Greg French.

Also placing in the top five were: Best Special Event Coverage (4th place), John Connor Coulston; Best Arts and Entertainment Writer (5th place), John Connor Coulston; Best News Writer (5th place), Daniel Jansouzian.

The Sidelines’ website received 10th place in the Best Website competition.

On Saturday, winners of the on-site competition were named. The afternoon before, students fanned out across Atlanta to compete in various news writing and photo shooting events. The MTSU winners were: Feature Writing (1st place), Dylan Aycock; Sports Reporting (2nd place), Connor Grott; Arts and Entertainment Writing (Honorable Mention), John Connor Coulston; and News Writing (Honorable Mention), Maranda Faris. In addition, the MTSU team tied for third place in the overall sweepstakes competition.

More than 40 colleges and universities from Tennessee, Georgia, Alabama, Mississippi, Louisiana and Arkansas entered about 600 entries in this year’s contests.
