Chris Young embraced the holiday spirit of giving for MTSU students this year.

The Murfreesboro native and former Middle Tennessee State University student revealed plans for the Chris Young Scholarship in Recording Industry — a scholarship for recording industry students at MTSU.

“They have such a great recording industry program there, and Murfreesboro is my hometown, and it made a lot of sense to be able to partner with them and create a scholarship,” said Young, who explained it’s something he’s wanted to do for years. “The passion that I had for the recording industry program and the passion the school shows for the program, it’s just an amazing thing they do.”

Beginning in the fall of 2017, Young’s donation through his Chris Young Foundation will allow MTSU’s Department of Recording Industry to annually grant a scholarship for a rising junior or senior.

“There is nothing more meaningful than having a former student pay it forward by helping current and future students,” said Beverly Keel, chair of the Department of Recording Industry. “It’s so generous of Chris to use his time and resources to help make our students’ dreams become a reality. This is especially poignant to me because I have so much respect for Chris, not only as an artist but also as a person.”

Young’s new Christmas album “It Must Be Christmas” is in stores now. The country singer will appear on the Country Music Association’s “CMA Country Christmas” on Nov. 28 at 7 p.m. Central on ABC.
