Animation Career Review, an online resource for aspiring animators, game developers and more, listed MTSU’s animation program as the top in Tennessee. The program was also listed at No. 33 in the Top 50 Public Animation Schools and Colleges in the U.S. for 2017.

Housed in the College of Media and Entertainment, the animation program offers a Bachelor of Science in Animation and Mass Communication with concentrations in Electronic Media Communication. The two specialties are Electronic Media Production (video and film production) and Electronic Media Management (media management). A Master of Science in Media and Communication is also available, and it allows students to choose six hours of approved animation electives.

The classes are spearheaded by Professor Marc Barr and Associate Professor Kevin McNulty. Barr chaired the 2015 SIGGRAPH Conference at the Los Angeles Convention Center, and McNulty served as curator for the fourth annual Faculty Submitted Student Work Exhibit. Every year a group of 20 animation students attend the international convention to network with the movers and shakers in the industry. The annual SIGGRAPH conference is a five-day interdisciplinary educational experience in the latest computer graphics and interactive techniques, including a three-day commercial exhibition that attracts hundreds of exhibitors from around the world.
