Department of Recording Industry Professor Paul Fischer once again taught the very popular course “Britpop!” – a class that is part of the Cooperative Center for Study Abroad (CCSA) London Summer program.
Fischer and a group of MTSU Recording Industry majors (Chase Mabey, Lindsey Hendricks, Morgan Atkinson, Heather Huskey and Eric Owings) kicked off the first part of their four-week tour by tracking down the history of the Beatles in Liverpool. Stops included Penny Lane, the Strawberry Fields children’s home and the “Magical Mystery Tour.”
“We went to Liverpool to flesh out the substance of the Beatles contributions to British and world popular music,” Fischer said. “In the morning, we toured The Beatles Story – a tourist attraction, but factually accurate and has plenty of substance.”
After Liverpool, it was on to London where the guided “Rock ’n’ Roll Walking Tour” exposed the group to the Soho District and the club Ronnie Scott’s, the spot where Paul met Linda, and Trident Studios, where Lou Reed, Queen & David Bowie recorded.
The third leg of the tour took the students to the city of Brighton, where the group had afternoon tea at Cream Tea, a traditional English Tea Shop. Then it was on to Manchester, where the students posed in front of a bright blue Police Call Box reminiscent of Dr. Who’s Tardis and toured the studios of the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC). All in all, it wa just another example of the great way MTSU students spend their summers!
This is the sixth time Professor Fischer has offered this popular music course via CCSA. The four-week program enables students to experience a great city while earning 3 or 6 hours of credit.
